How to prepare your home for your baby

Every parent gets excited to decorate the baby’s room and this is reasonable. All the baby’s furniture is just adorable. But besides the baby’s room, you need to think about a space for the baby’s items in the kitchen, the bathroom, and the living room. Here are some pieces of advice on how to prepare your home for your baby given by rooms and what will you need in everyone.

Kitchen

You will need to find some space in the kitchen cabinets. It is best to choose one cabinet in which you can keep all the baby’s items. In that case, it will be easier to find everything that you need for the baby quickly, and also when someone else is taking care of the baby won’t go through all your cabinets to find what it is needed.

For my baby, I needed only one shelf because she is breastfed. On this shelf, I kept all hers:

  • clean pacifiers,
  • pacifier holders and clips,
  • clean bottles (1 glass bottle with a volume of 120 ml and 1 glass bottle with a volume of 240 ml),
  • bottle warmer (I use it for the pumped breastmilk and to warm her food when we started the weaning),
  • breastmilk storage bags,
  • electric breast pump with all backup parts for it – shields, connectors, valves, membranes, hand breast pump,
  • baby dish soap, I always buy two, so I won’t run out of it,
  • measure cup, which I used for the water needed for the sterilizer and the food preparation later.

I kept all the dirty baby tools in a plastic box next to the sink, at the edge of which I was keeping the bottle brush, dish sponge, and baby dish soap. That way the baby tools did not get extra dirty from our dishes or when someone was washing fruits or vegetables.

I also organized a special place to hold the baby sterilizer and baby bottle drying rack on the kitchen countertop.

Keep in mind that at some point you will start weaning and you will need extra space. I strongly recommend to every mom to prepare the baby food on her own. That way you will be sure that your little one is eating fresh, quality, and tasty food, prepared with a lot of love and care. And it is even cheaper than buying a ready one.

Bathroom

You will need to organize a little space in your bathroom for the baby. Probably the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about what you need for the baby bath is a small yellow duck, but you will need it a bit later. First, you need to think about some other stuff, like where will you shower the baby, maybe the sink, the shower, the bathtub, or a baby bathtub?

If you choose to wash the baby in the sink you should remove everything that it is placed on it like soup, toothpaste, toothbrush, etc. You don’t want to spill or break anything around your baby. The sink is perfect for the first months because babies feel safe when their stomach is covered. The best way to hold your baby is under the armpits with a stomach against the sink bottom.

For washing the baby in the bath tube you should buy a baby bath support. It will make the bath time so much easier and fun for sure.

The shower is not the safest option, because when you use baby wash soap/cream, the baby’s skin gets slippery. If you choose to wash the baby under the shower with you just be extra careful and you can invest in a no-slippery mat for bathroom.

I found that baby bathtubs are the best choice because you can use them everywhere in the house, not only in the bathroom. If you choose them you should think about investing some money in a high stand, that way the bath time will be easier for you and your back won’t start hurting you.

You will need to find space for the baby bath cosmetic, which involves at least body wash cream and shampoo. They should be close by when you wash the baby. Also, think about a space for the bath-toys. You may not use them in the first 5 months but the time fly and they will become the best part of the shower ritual.

And don’t forget about the towel, maybe you need to make a new hanger for it.

Living room

Usually, people are spending most of their time in the living room. So you need to think about where the baby’s place will be in the living room. In the first two months, you probably don’t need a play space, but you will need a safe place to put the baby while you are in the living room.

Baby bouncers can be of great help for the parents. You can put the baby in it and have 10-15 minutes for yourself. Don’t forget to watch the baby because they can rollover. It is best to place the bouncer on the floor so in case the baby does roll over it won’t fall from high.

An active gym or play mat is also a good choice for the living room. Another possibility is to buy a portable play yard, but before going for it make sure you have enough space for it.

For my daughter, I used a bouncer (I always put her there when she was awake and I needed to prepare food for me) and play mat with a wooden baby gym.
